Isaac Joel Linetzky (1840–1915): author of the first Yiddish-language bestseller
Isaac Joel Linetzky was born in Vinnytsia on September 8, 1839. He entered history as one of the founders of modern Jewish literature and the author of the novella «The Hasidic Lad» («Dos poylishe yingl») — the first major prose work in Yiddish, which became a true bestseller among Jews in Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century.

Having grown up in the traditional Hasidic environment of Podillya, Linetsky became a supporter of the Haskalah — the Jewish Enlightenment movement advocating the spread of secular knowledge, the integration of Jews into broader society, and the overcoming of cultural barriers. His experience living among Hasidim allowed him to create exceptionally accurate and vivid depictions of the Ukrainian shtetls of the mid-19th century.
Linetsky began his literary career in the Odesa newspapers «Ha-Melitz» та «Kol Mevaser», where he published humorous stories. His style was distinguished by simplicity, sharp wit, and a deep knowledge of everyday life, making his work accessible to a wide audience.

«The Hasidic Lad» (1869) caused a sensation: it combined autobiographical elements, biting satire, and detailed ethnographic depictions of Jewish daily life. The book became popular not only among critics of Hasidism but also within Hasidic communities, as Linetsky critiqued tradition from the inside — yet always with humor.

Despite his enormous success, Linetsky remained «the author of one book». His other works never surpassed «The Hasidic Lad», and he was eventually overshadowed in popularity by the next generation of Jewish writers. Nevertheless, the significance of his work is hard to overstate: it laid the foundation for the development of Jewish prose and serves as a valuable source of knowledge about life in 19th-century Ukrainian shtetls.

Today «The Hasidic Lad» is read not only as a literary work but also as a historical document — a unique bridge to a world preserved only in memory and books.
